يتميز الشرق الأوسط بخصوصيةٍ جغرافيةٍ وإقتصاديةٍ وجيوإستراتيجيةٍ، لكنه يعاني العديد من المشكلات، كالخلاف حول ما يعنيه كمفهوم، أو ما يمثله من امتداد جغرافي. والسؤال يتعلق بالغموض الذي يلف مفهوم الشرق الأوسط؟ والغرض من اطلاقه؟ كما يتعلق باهميته من الناحية الجيوستراتيجية والجيواقتصادية والجيوثقافية؟ ومظاهر هذه الأهمية؟ وإلى أي مدى احتفظ بقيمته في إستراتيجيات القوى الكبرى؟. فرضيات البحث:1- إن فهم حاضر الشرق الاوسط, يستلزم فهم ماضيه.2- إن تعدد المفهومات لمنطقة الشرق الاوسط, يرتبط بمصالح دولية سياسية واستراتيجية. 3- إن قيمة الشرق الاوسط الجيوسترتيجية, جعلته نقطة استقطاب للقوى الكبرى.
